In September 2011, a government run shelter in Gumi designed to “care” for stray animals was accused of collecting and eating stray dogs. CARE and MBC (Moonwha Broadcasting Corporation) teamed up to conduct a surprise investigation at the shelter. Body parts of dogs were found throughout the shelter, including a dog’s head in the freezer. Also, the conditions in which the stray dogs were being kept was absolutely disgusting and inhumane. The evidence was documented with cameras and video footage and posted online, making it accessible to the public. The backlash has been incredible, with thousands of angry citizens asking for the shelter to be shut down. CARE has been publicly pushing for the shelter to change hands. Luckily, a local group of veterinarians working at Gumoh Animal Hospital has stepped up to take control and promised to run the shelter in the most humane way possible. CARE supports this transition.
