On Monday, July 30, 212, Coexistence of Animal Rights on Earth (CARE) and Korea Animal Association Protection (KAAP) held a protest in front of the Government Building in Gwacheon. The protest was held to voice outrage over abused animals being transported and to create a penalty clause for those who break the law. Currently, the law states animals must be treated humanely while being transported but there are no fines associated with breaking such law.
The turnout at the protest was great, with people attending from many different organizations. A number of journalists also came so the news could be exposed on various newspapers and websites.
Immediately following the protest, CARE and KAAP had a meeting with the manager, deputy director, and other officers from Ministry of Food, Agriculture, Foresty, and Fishery (MFAFF). In the past, CARE and KAAP have asked to initiate a fine for breaking animal transportation laws, but to no avail.
But many recent incidents involving animal abuse & transportation have made the news: Jeju Devil truck, Devil Equus, Devil Visto, & Devil Motorcycle. Collectively, this seemed to convince the officers of MFAFF to do something. After much persuasion, they eventually agreed and promised to create a fine.
Below are the articles decided through the meeting:
- CARE & KAAP stated to MIFAFF that ‘Dog Luggage Transportation’ is harmful to animals’ physiological and psychological functions. It is obvious animal abuse and illegal according to current animal protection law’s article nr.8. Since an entire amendment of the animal protection law would take too long, CARE & KAAP asked only for an amendment of the animal transportation law to be proposed. MIFAFF promised to create and pass such an amendment as soon as possible.
- CARE & KAAP requested action to stop the illegal practice of transporting dogs inhumanely before the amendment is passed. MIFAFF said they don’t have any numbers regarding dog farms or transporters but they promised a thorough investigation and sufficient action to crack down on this illegal activity.
What you can do:
Please submit a civil complaint to MIFAFF on this issue and request a penalty clause for violations of animal welfare during transportation.
Boycott the dog meat industry which is primarily responsible for these atrocious crimes. Sign the petition to make dog meat illegal.
