When we first found Somang, he was tied to an old chair on a narrow street. He seemed very scared and wouldn’t come out from under the chair. We came to learn that his owner was an elder Korean man who often verbally and physically abused him.

When we confronted the owner, he told us he had originally bought Somang in order to eat him. But he had became very angry when Somang did not grow big enough to eat.  (Tibetan Spaniels are typically small).

Just like any other dog that has lived its whole life in fear, Somang would cower when approached by a person. When we tried making eye-contact, he would urinate and shake in fear.

Of course, we wanted to free him from this disgustingly terrifying situation, but the stubborn Korean abusing grandpa wouldn’t give him up.

But neither would we. After a long time of talking and persuading, the man finally agreed to give the dog up for money.

We reluctantly agreed because we couldn’t find any other way to get Somang out of that situation.  (Korean law treats all animals like PROPERTY, and we have no legal right to take the animal away, regardless of how much abuse is being inflicted (We are working hard to change this antiquated law)).

Amazingly, Somang was quickly able to overcome his abusive past and adapt to the CARE shelter’s friendly environment.

Somang dreams every night of finding a good home with a peaceful family.
